Look! Mobile eye-tracking glasses

The Look! Eye-tracking glasses is a head-mounted, mobile eye-tracker with some quite unique properties:

While eye-tracking devices have raced each other in sub-degree spatial accuracy, we instead focus on robustness.
What’s the point of sub-degree accuracy (under ideal conditions), if a substantial fraction of the samples are marked invalid or untrustworthy?

Instead of running a traditional eye-tracking pipeline with pupil detection, eye modelling and personalized gaze estimation (which is just a single configuration switch away in our software), we apply deep neural networks to the task. Our state-of-the-art deep learning pipeline offers improved reliability under challenging conditions.

We transferred components that usually require high manufacturing precision into software. That enables us to produce devices with higher tolerances at a reduced cost. Our software compensates slight camera translation and rotation, displacement between NIR-illumination and eye cameras as well as movement of the cameras with regard to each other fully automatically.

What that means for you and your application. Ever wanted to record interactions between subjects but had only a single eye-tracking device at hand? Just buy two or three and still save money. Ever spent several days in the lab, a supermarket or a museum to get a representative sample size? Measuring one subject after the other is a waste of time. Why not acquire data faster in parallel?
Ever wanted to teach a practical course on eye-tracking but were lacking the hardware? Buying is not an option as you need them only for a limited time? Just rent a bunch.

Ever moved outdoors with your eye-tracker? Ours keeps working.

Components and Technical specification

  • Eye tracking technique: Appearance based gaze estimation
  • Binocular eye tracking: both eyes can be calibrated separately. That enables usage even when squinting.
  • Sampling rate: 30Hz (60Hz available on request)
  • Calibration procedure: 1-point and smooth pursuit (recommended)
  • Pupil measurement: Pupil size measures are currently not available.
  • Accuracy: 3° real-world proven. Much better in lab and without eye-glasses

About us

Our office is located in Tübingen, Germany.

We produce locally, assemble in-house and ship worldwide.

Our history: In 2012, we tried using eye-tracking technology outside of the lab for the first time – in a driving school car. We wanted to know if people with visual field defects (blind spots) exhibit compensatory gaze patterns. And the technology failed us miserably. It just wasn’t designed for usage out of the lab. Measuring through glasses, with make-up and under real lighting conditions was simply too much for the systems of that time. We were able to throw a good part of the recordings in the bin. Frustrating. And yet a great starting point for exciting research.

Eye tracking outside of the lab, e.g. in the car, is quite complex from an engineering perspective. At the Chair of Media Informatics / Human Computer Interaction at the University of Tübingen and the Chair of Vision Research at the University of Aalen, we developed methods to make eye tracking better.

We have laid the foundations with more than 40 scientific publications. Now we are bringing a new generation of devices back to the streets.

Our start-up offers eye-tracking glasses that are specially tailored to the conditions outside of the lab. The included artificial intelligence analyzes an image of the eye and uses it to calculate a complex eye model. Without explicit pupil detection that may easily fail. Of course our glasses do work together with habitually worn glasses, contact lenses, make-up and a multitude of other real-world influences.

FAQ

How do I get started with using Look! eye tracking?
Grab our software over here!
Connect your device via USB2.0.
Calibrate it with the calibration marker and you are good to go. Happy tracking!

How accurate is the eye-tracking?
That depends on several factors. Within the lab and using a traditional eye-tracking pipeline (Setting the mode to “Pupil Detection” instead of “AI”), you can reach sub-degree accuracy with active slippage compensation.
When using the AI mode and tracking unconstrained, in the field (with eyeglasses, sunlight, no pre-selection in subjects) an error of 2-3 degree is realistic.

What operating systems does the software support?
Currently only Windows is supported. We can run with Parallels on a Mac.There is also a special software version that runs on a Raspberry Pi. If you feel lucky and want to try a regular Linux build, we’d be happy to help out.

What if my device gets damaged?
First off: Please do not continue to use damaged devices. You might seriously harm someone.
We will of course repair any damage caused through normal use (please don’t sit on the device or use excessive force). Many parts are easily exchangeable and we might be able to just send you the replacement parts really fast. That’s free of charge the first year after purchase.

To report a defect, simply contact us, e.g. by email info@eyetracking-research.de

How long does it take for equipment to be delivered?
Regular delivery time is 1-3 workdays within Germany. Longer to other countries.
Please see the delivery time indicator in the shop system in case we run out of stock.

Do you offer warranties?
Yes, we offer a 1 year warranty by default. But also afterwards we will be happy to help you repair the device.

Can I test the device in advance?
You can book a 4-week trial to test the device for 99,90€. In case you decide to keep the device after the trial, 50€ will be deduced from the final price.

Do you offer discounts?
We offer the eye-tracking devices at a very low cost already. That limits our ability to grant discounts. However, we are happy to talk to you in case you need more than one device.
